Shed Roofs Coming Down
This is a big week in the historic district – say goodbye to the shed roofs. Whether you liked them or hated them, they will be no more at the end of the week. Once the shed roofs are gone, sidewalks will be ripped out and replaced. Property owners are working with an architect to design new façades – The 600 and 800 block facades will be completed by November 15, while the 700 block facades will be installed in 2011.
Tunnels See the Light
Secret tunnels exist under Sutter Street and were documented and photographed during the revitalization project. Its original purpose seems to be that of drainage, though it’s rumored they were used to hide alcohol during the prohibition days.
Sutter Street in "Gawky" Stage
The Bee’s Rick Kushman visited Sutter Street recently, and observed that it’s in a bit of a “gawky” stage, tho odd stage between adolescence and maturity. Kushman was impressed by all the cool places to hang out, especially at night. What’s to come? A historic district pub crawl.
