Cap Makes a Folsom Stop
Captain America, in movie theaters now, was shot partly in Folsom. Well, maybe not on the Hollywood version. 1978′s “Captain America II: Death Too Soon” sees the Cap make a plunge off Folsom Dam. There are also later scenes at the prison as well.
Spillway Gates Begin
Folsom Dam’s spillway construction continues with a new phase – spillway gates. Excavation work has finished, and now a $126 million project to build new gates begins. Once completed, the lake will be able to dump water at a faster rate in the event of a large storm.
Big Dam Dump!
The impending storm this weekend is expected to bring a lot of water, so the USBOR is releasing a ton of water – about 30,000 feet per second by this evening. Get your cameras ready and stop by the bridge if you want to get some good pictures!
Dam Getting Wheel Gates
Folsom Dam will be getting $7.8M for refurbishing its wheel gates. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is funding the program, where Abide International, will rehabilitate three fixed wheel gates and sets of gate stems, among other things.
Mormon Island Dam pictures
I was out for a late afternoon walk at Mormon Island Dam. I’ve heard that they’ve been doing some work to raise and strengthen the dam, but was surprised at the scale of the effort.
They’re busy moving mountains. All this dirt has been brought in from the spillway project near Folsom Dam.
Mormon Island Aux Dam Meetings
The auxilary dam near Mormon Island will soon be undergoing measures to strengthen the earthen wall that holds back Folsom Lake. If you are interested in knowing more about it, there are public meetings on December 2 and 4.
Folsom Lake Overpass Complete
Construction on the overpass for construction vehicles is now complete at Folsom Lake. The Dam Raise construction project originally called for closing down Folsom point to recreational traffic, but public outcry changed the plans.
Dam Doomed???
Will the Folsom Dam break, killing thousands of residents? Satire website The Onion reports on a pre-emptive memorial for Folsom Dam. “Mayor” Joseph Sheridan announced he will announce his resignation the moment the Dam breaks. (It’s a joke, in case you were confused…)

New Spillway OK’d
As part of the Folsom Dam Raise project, the US Bureau of Reclamation and Army Corps of Engineers have signed off on a new spillway for Folsom Dam, which would run parallel to the new bridge, currently under construction. The project will start in October and may go in to 2018 or 2019.
Dam Spillway Gets OK
The Folsom Dam Spillway has cleared its final hurdle before construction can begin. The Federal Bureau of Reclamation has approved the environmental review of the project, and bids are now being sought for construction. Construction may begin as early as October.
