It’s Folsom Lake Crossing

In a move that stunned many, Folsom City Council decided to go against the grain and disassociate the city with Johnny Cash. 4 members of the public came forward to speak in favor of Johnny Cash, including the head of the Folsom Tourism Bureau… but the council decided to name it Folsom Lake Crossing, even though it doesn’t even cross Folsom Lake. Kerri Howell was the lone dissenting vote.

Down to 4 Choices

The new bridge name will be revealed Tuesday, though it has been narrowed down to 4 themes: Johnny Cash, Folsom Lake, Folsom Dam, and Granite City (the city’s original name). City Council will decide on Tuesday.

800 Names to Choose From

The City of Folsom will soon choosing a new name for the bridge that is being built next to the Dam. Over 800 entries were proposed, with names ranging from Johnny Cash Crossing to “Heaven’s Gate”. Someone even proposed “MyFolsom Bridge”!

Name the New Bridge

The new Dam Road Bypass Bridge is under construction and should be done soon… now what should it be named? The city is taking suggestions until April 22 – they’ll even put a plaque with your name on the bridge if your name is chosen. Email suggestions at namethebridgecontest@folsom.ca.us.

Movin’ Right Along

The new Folsom Dam Bridge construction is making progress. Concrete is currently being poured to form the columns. Though originally planned to be open in 2005, the bridge is on track for opening during late 2008 or early 2009.

New Spillway OK’d

As part of the Folsom Dam Raise project, the US Bureau of Reclamation and Army Corps of Engineers have signed off on a new spillway for Folsom Dam, which would run parallel to the new bridge, currently under construction. The project will start in October and may go in to 2018 or 2019.

Dam Bridge Passes Next Steps

In what seems like an endless array of steps towards getting a new bridge approved, Senate Bill 1536 is allowing the city to purchase 14 acres needed for bridge construction. After the environmental impact report is approved, next steps are getting bids for the project.

Mayor Morin Addresses City

Mayor Andy Morin wrote a letter to the city regarding the bridge developments and the selection of the new city manager. The bridge is undergoing an environmental assessment, and Morin is happy to announce the selection of Kerry Miller to city manager.

Bridge Over Troubled Water?

The Folsom Dam Bypass Bridge hit a minor snag last week – though the project is still on, some at the US Bureau of Reclamation even questioned the need for the bridge. It was an unsettling comment to say the least. The bridge is expected to be open by December 2008.

New Bridge May Hit a Snag

The Folsom Dam Bypass Bridge is currently being “fast-tracked” to a 2007 opening, however a design issue with the Folsom Dam raise project may pose a problem. A new spillway may be needed for the Dam, which would be perilously close the the bridge. Vice Mayor Andy Morin feels the bridge can be modified, however, to accomodate the design issue.
