Tahoe Joe’s Closed
The economy has hit another chain – this time Tahoe Joe’s. The Folsom location held a mandatory staff meeting and informed employees it would be closing its doors. The economy did not help, and further competition from Land Ocean and Sutter Street Steakhouse did not help.
Wise Buys In – Office Max Out
Office Max looks to be vacating its location on Riley Street, and discount retailer Wise Buys will be taking its place. Wise Buys is similar to Dollar Tree, but the merchandise is all $9.98 or less. Some MyFolsom netizens has likened it to a “less expensive Tuesday Morning”. Roseville has a store called Stupid Prices that may be a similar format.
Borders Forced to Liquidate
Borders Books, after 40 years in the book industry, is being forced to liquidate all of its stores, including the Folsom location. The store is expected to cease operations and go out of business in September 2011.
Siefkin Library Closing
One of the least-known secrets in Folsom is closing its doors. The Folsom Library opened with much fanfare, but not many knew that there was a new public library open on the campus of Vista Del Lago High School. Students and the public were allowed to use it. Effective July 1, the library will close and assets moved to the main library. Students will be able to continue to use facilities for study rooms and computer labs however. If you have books from the library, please return them by July 1.
$5 Diner Closing June 5
$5 Diner will be closing June 5. The breakfast & coffee shop has been in town a few years and was originally an offshoot of popular Lake Tahoe eatery Ernie’s Diner. The sign on the door has stated that a family has purchased the restaurant. It is unknown when a replacement will be in.
2 More Businesses Go
2 more long-time businesses in Folsom have closed. Kirala Sushi, a one-time “Best of Folsom” winner, has closed, and It’s a Grind in Broadstone has closed as well. It is not known if tenants have been found for their locations.
Periwinkle Closing
The Christmas shopping season was not as kind as hoped to local gift shop Periwinkle – they have announced that they will be shutting their doors. Inventory clearance begins Tuesday at 10am.
Diver’s Cove Closing
Local SCUBA shop Diver’s Cove is closing its doors. Owner Robert Flores sent a letter out to customers that after 13 years, he’s been given an offer he can’t pass up and will be soon deployed over in Iraq. It is unknown when the shop’s last day will be.
Hollywood Video Closed
Employees of Hollywood Video were surprised to see that it is shutting its doors as of today. There is no official notice as to where to bring rented videos if you have movies or games checked out.

Hello, Goodbye
Some new businesses are sprouting up… The Big Salad (formerly Togos in Prairie City), Straw Hat Pizza (formerly Baja Fresh), Folsom Bicycle/Folsom Grind (by the new bridge), and Gonzo’s Deli where Ugly Mug was. Big Dip’s now gone, and La Rosa Blanca is coming in.
