Pei Wei
2371 Iron Point Road / (916)
984-8022
We were eager to try out
Pei Wei - so
eager, we failed to realize they hadn't opened yet. The first time
we stopped by it was no more than a few walls and a bunch of
construction debris. It's actually kind of hard to find, as the
signage for the place isn't immediately visible from Iron Point, but
it's in the
REI
parking lot area.
Anyway... Unfazed, we came back when we heard they were open. It has
a couple good things going for it - it's a spin-off of the popular
chain P.F.Chaing's, and it's kind of a quick-style restaurant. You
can't go wrong, right?
We immediately came in and got a 5-minute lesson on how to order
(like we've never ordered food before?)... we kind of just wanted to
see the menu but she kept rambling on about their "pick a dish, pick
a meat" style of menu that some find utterly baffling. We ordered
our food and found a seat. I had the sweet and sour pork (I need to
venture out a bit, I always end up ordering that), while Annie got
the Pan-seared chicken salad. The total with drinks was something
like $22.
The place is definitely well thought out - very trendy looking, and
a little different. That's a good thing. If it's one thing I hate,
it's a cookie cutter chain restaurant. More on that in a bit.
Our food came relatively quickly, and Annie's "pan-seared" chicken
was actually "battered and deep fried"... she asked if this was
intentional, and the server kind of shrugged it off and said "yeah",
and left. Annie's not a big fan of the deep fried food, so I ended
up eating it. I actually thought it was quite tasty, and realized I
made a poor choice with sweet & sour pork. I thought it was OK, but
we were both kind of turned off by the server's apathy towards the
service. Considering there were literally 3 people standing around
looking like they had nothing to do, we were not very impressed.
Annie left still hungry, and the sweet and sour pork was average at
best.
We thought the best thing this had going for it was the originality.
I mean, finally, a trendy restaurant that you can't find at, you
know... Elk Grove, Natomas, Roseville, and Davis. Then we looked at
the menu on our table. Already open in 3 of the 4 cities mentioned
above. Oops. I guess we're late to this game.
We won't be back.
