Cool Off at Folsom Lake

A wet spring and rising temperatures equates to a lake full of water... and people. Since a few of the parking lots are under water, some people have had to be turned away at Folsom Lake, as there is not enough room for everyone. Every weekend, about 1,400 boats visit the lake. Asbestos? ... Who Cares?

...2 people, to be exact. After 1,700 fliers were sent out to Folsom residents regarding how Folsom-Cordova planned on cleaning up the naturally occurring asbestos at the Lago Vista High School work site, only 2 showed up to speak at the hearing. For the record, the school grounds will be covered with clean fill, and fabric, however it appears the public's concern for this is not very much. Details

Asbestos at Lago Vista High School

Empire Ranch residents are a little alarmed at the discovery of naturally-occurring asbestos at the site of the new Lago Vista High School, scheduled to open in Fall 2006. Serpentine rock, a common creator of natural asbestos, was found on the land, and now a multi-million dollar cleanup effort is planned, possibly delaying the school to 2007. Details: Sac Bee

Folsom Lake at Capacity - 466 feet above sea level

Folsom residents that have been to the lake recently have seen something the city has not seen in some time: a capacity-level lake. With the late rains and snowfall in April, water has been flowing at a rapid pace, causing boat ramps and parking lots to fill with water. While boaters of the lake have loved the increased surface water level, it has caused an issue, since some boat launches and parking lots have ended up underwater. More is in the Bee.

In 1956, Johnny Cash put Folsom on the map with his #1 Billboard hit, "Folsom Prison Blues". If nothing else, Folsom is well known for its maximum-security prison, with many thanks to Johnny Cash. Though he never shot a man in Reno just to watch him die, it still is a catchy tune, and one of Cash's most famous songs. Click here to read a little bit about it.

City Council Looks to Prairie Oaks & Willow Springs to Shoulder Almost 40% of Low-Income Re-Zoning

Prairie Oaks and Willow Springs residents are concerned over the possibility of over 51 acres of property being rezoned for low-income housing purposes. The areas specifically are almost 42 acres surrounding Folsom High School, in addition to 10 acres of land near Safeway on Iron Point, directly across the street from Intel, compiling a total of almost 40% of land looking to be re-zoned. Residents are specifically interested about the effects it will have on the high school, as well as the overall concern that the re-zoned land will not be distributed evenly throughout Folsom communities. The next planning commission hearing is October 16, 6:30, City Hall.
