It's Day 1 for the brand new Intel spin-off, Numonyx. Intel spun off its flash memory business last year and the transition has officially started. More than 400 Folsom employees will work out of FM3 until more permanent housing is created.

Numonyx Launch Delayed

Numonyx, a new company that will be spun off of Intel's old flash business, has delayed it's official start date to March 28, citing financing. The business will employ 400 employees (mostly ex-Intel employees) and will reside in Intel's FM3 building until office space in El Dorado Hills is secured.

"Bike to Work" Another Big Success

May is "Bike to Work Month" - and Folsom bikers are striving to log over a million miles this month. The annual "Bike to Work" picnic returned to Folsom City Lions' park, witn over 300 advocated signed up. Intel was the city's largest bike user, logging 13,000 miles in the month of May.

Intel Sells Flash Business

In a move to shed a struggling business, Intel Corporation has sold its Flash division to STMicroelectronics, creating the largest producer of flash memory chips. Most Intel Folsom employees (in the hundreds) are expected to keep their jobs.

Intel Folsom Braces for Impact

In what has been anticipated for months, Intel has announced a major round of layoffs on Tuesday - 10,500 company wide, with significant cuts in IT and marketing, both dominant in Folsom. Intel has already let go 5,000 employees, which factor in to the total number of job cuts.

Intel Cuts 1,000 Managers

In a surprise move that shocked Intel employees, the announcement was made that 1,000 managers worldwide could be laid off. This cut is the second wave of job cuts, and more are expected in the coming months. More than 50 Folsom managers were affected by this layoff.

Overhaul Coming for Intel

Intel CEO Paul Otellini has announced that Intel will undergo a major restructuring, resulting in a 'leaner, more efficient' company. Intel has faced more competition from rival AMD, and employs more than 7,000 people at its Folsom campus.

WiMax Coming to Folsom?

Folsom may be one of the first cities in the US to have WiMax capabilities. Intel is making major investments in WiMax, and is donating a lot of equipment to get it up and running. A single WiMax tower could power wireless connectivity up to 30 miles.

Intel Plans on Building #8

Already uncomfortably full in its Folsom campus, Intel is pushing ahead with plans to build FM8, which was shelved in 2001 during the fallout of the dot-com bust. The building will hold 1,500 workers, who will mostly spill over from other buildings. Story in today's Bee, Sacramento Business Journal.

HP's Loss, Intel's Gain

Hewlett-Packard went through a recent downturn in the economy, which meant layoffs to some employees. Fortunately, the timing wasn't all that bad, as Intel has been hiring quite a bit lately, with 4,000 US jobs available. This means a lot of displaced workers have ended up at Intel. Where they'll sit is another question, as the campus is nearing capacity...

In an effort to reduce costs, Intel has made the decision to move its Technical Assistance Center to Costa Rica. Though the jobs will be going away, Intel plans on finding displaced employees a job in Folsom. Story in the Bee.

South of 50 Plans In Play

The city of Folsom is pushing forward with plans to annex land south of Highway 50, and under the current vision, it will look very similar to Folsom today, though 150 acres is set aside for walkable communities. It has land set aside for another major employer along the same scale as Intel. Story in the Bee.

Coming Soon...

A new retail/office complex is coming in the South Folsom area, near Intel. Folsom Corners will be a 12-acre complex situated at Prairie City & Willard. Currently 2 of the corners of this intersection are developed, occupied by a Safeway Center, and a small retail area with Phoenix School being the largest tenants. Willard Drive is expected to eventually extend out to the Intel entrance. Details in the Bee.

Intel Folsom Turns 20

In 1984, Folsom was a rural town on the outskirts of the county, whose economy was fueled by Folsom Prison. Intel decided to build a satellite campus at what is now Prairie City Road and Iron Point - in the middle of nowhere at the time. Today Intel is the largest employer in the Sacramento Valley, and still has a little room to grow. Full Story.

Cash Back For Intel Investors?

After Microsoft Corporation decided to award cash back to its investors at the tune of $3 per share, Intel Corporation may be considering the same. Intel has $17 billion in cash, and may re-distibute some of its excess wealth. More in the Business Journal.

Gold Medal Service From Intel

Intel Folsom is one of the biggest unsung heroes behind the 2004 Track & Field Trials - with 750 volunteers helping out in the event, it is the backbone of running the event successfully. Excess Intel Land Sold

22 acreas of real estate at the northwest corner of Prairie City Road and Willard Drive have been sold by Intel to Panattoni Development Corporation. New Chips For Intel

Intel, the largest employer in the Sacramento Valley, has announced 4 new microchips which may slash costs in half, while delivering higher performance. Its new "Prescott" line of Pentium 4 chips uses circuits that are 90 billionths of a nanometer wide, some at only 4-7 atoms thick. More in the Business Journal.

Intel Expansion Unlikely

Though $20 million has already been spent on the expansion of Intel's Folsom campus with the beginning stages of construction of FM-8, FM-9, and a parking garage, it is unlikely Intel will start the project back up unless California reforms its worker's compensation and tax issues. Intel CEO Craig Barrett was recently reported from Reuters as saying Intel would never expand its business in California. More in today's Bee.

Intel Equips Raley Field With Wi-Fi

Thanks to Intel Folsom, fans of the Sacramento RiverCats can surf the web wirelessly without hassle. Intel has been moving out and about the community creating "hot spots", or wireless access points where users can log on. 35 Years ago, Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and Andy Grove started up a small company that they had no idea would grow to be one of the biggest corporations in the world. Intel Corporation celebrates 35 years, and now operates in 40 countries around the globe with more than 78,000 employees. The world's largest chipmaker and Sacramento's biggest employer is enjoying a rise in stock, as it's quarterly earnings are up, possibly signalling a spark in the economic outlook.

Intel's Kid to Work Day a Big Success

Intel's Ninth Annual Kid to Work Day was a great success, attracting over 1,400 children of Intel employees. Children aged 8-18 (though a majority of the children were around 5 years old) attended an all-day event which included many technology-based workshops. The event has become such a large success over the years, FCUSD has requested that Intel move the event to summer, so it would not conflict with school. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Hit With Large Vacancy Rates

"If you build them, they will come". Or so they thought.... Folsom is one of a few communities who has built many high-end apartments in the last couple of years, only to see them go vacant. Low interest rates and layoffs at Intel and other high-tech companies are to blame for a large part of the vacancies, as much as 18% in some areas. Folsom has the area's highest average rent, at $1049 a month, compared to a regional average of $868. More is in the Sacramento Business Journal.

Intel Ranks High as Corporate Citizen

Intel's commitment to employee safety ranks it as the third-best corporate citizen in the nation, according to Business Ethics Magazine. Intel's average injury rate was 0.27 per 100 employees, compared to a national average of 6.7. Intel commonly practices safety in the workplace, while working to ensure future accidents do not happen. CEO Craig Barrett even demands an email report within 24 hours of any lost-day injuries. Win-Win-Win: Folsom, Most Residents, Intel All Win

Folsom just got a little closer to its affordable housing goals on Tuesday night. Folsom gained 10 more acres for its affordable housing needs, Intel can now develop the rest of the property how it wants, and most of the residents are pleased with the greenbelt buffer in between Natoma Station and the new housing complex. Though most everyone is pleased, Southern Folsom residents in general are not happy about Folsom's continued concentration of affordable housing in southern Folsom. More is in the Bee.

Intel Cuts 100 Folsom Jobs; More on the Way

In what has been expected for a couple months, Intel Corporation has identified 500 positions to shed from IT (information Technology) in an effort to cut costs. 100 of these positions came directly from Folsom. In June, Intel will be eliminating 250 more jobs as well - it is not known how many will come from Folsom. More is in the Bee.

Natoma Station Residents Claim Partial Victory

The latest chapter in the saga of affordable housing in Folsom is drawing near to a close, as the city has agreed to create a 3-acre buffer of landscaping in between the Natoma Station subdivision, and 41 acres of land currently owned by Intel. 10 acres of the land will go towards affordable housing, and the other acreage is now zoned commercial. Several residents wanted the landscape buffer to span a larger area, however many residents are fairly happy with the compromise. More info is in the Bee.

Affordable Housing Issues Continue

As the city seeks to fulfill the last of its affordable housing needs, more and more residents are pushing back. The latest group to oppose the zoning are Natoma Station residents - they are not in favor of development of 13 acres of land currently owned by Intel. The tree-lined area currently serves as a buffer between the neighborhood and existing developments, not to mention the fact that the South Folsom area contains a large majority of low-income housing re-zones. Intel Helping City With Affordable Housing Goals

Santa Clara based Intel Corporation, Sacramento Valley's leading employer, has decided to help the city reach its affordable housing goals, by giving it 10 acres of unused land. A majority of affordable housing has been slated for South Folsom, while North Folsom only comprises about 1% of the city's affordable housing goals. The city votes on the land next month. City Pushing Ahead With Affordable Housing in South Folsom

The City of Folsom is defiantly pushing ahead with affordable housing, and though they missed their deadline of having all land rezoned by the end of 2003, they plan on having the required 138 acres very soon. On the block is a 10-acre site of land owned by Intel, as well as land at the corner of East Natoma and Blue Ravine. More information is in the Bee.

Intel's profits Up 141%

Intel CEO Craig Barrett announced today that a strong 4th quarter helped Intel rebound, and in 2002 had a net income of $3.12 billion. Earlier this week, Intel announced its new Centrino Mobile Technology brand, which is expected to be as well-known as the Pentium brand of microprocessors in 10 years. Intel, Sacramento's largest employer, employs about 6,500 people on its Folsom campus. More in the Business Journal.

Several Sites Up For Review Get Rezoned

More areas of land in the city limits have been re-zoned for affordable housing purposes last Monday night. A big win for Prairie Oaks & Willow Springs residents was the removal of 13.8 acres of land near the high school, which helped alleviate part of the potential 'clustering' in the South Folsom area. The Intel land was delayed due to a conflict of interest. More information is in the Bee.

Folsom as an Economic "Hub"

With a little help from Intel, Folsom has become a hub of economic prosperity in the Sacramento region. Approximately 277,000 workers are employed in the Folsom region (Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Rancho Cordova, etc.), a 57% increase in the last 10 years. Though Folsom did little to attract large corporations such as Intel, analysts feel the "next one" won't be as easy. A 400,000 person / $12 Billion is envisioned in the years ahead. Intel to Cut 4,000 Jobs Worldwide

Folsom employer Intel Corporation, one of Sacramento Valley's leading employers, recently announced it will be cutting 4,000 jobs in its global workforce, in an effort to cut costs. CEO Craig Barrett made this announcement early Tuesday morning, and it is not known how much this will impact Folsom employees. Employee headcount will be reduced through attrition, a voluntary separation program, as well as layoffs. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.

Folsom Ranks First in Median Income, Second in College Grads

The 2000 census data is in, and Folsom has ranked first in the Sacramento Valley in median income, with an average income of $82,000. Folsom trails only Davis in the percentage of college graduates in the area. Davis, which is most well known for its university (UC Davis), tops in at almost 69%. Many factors figure to weigh in to the high percentage of income in the area, however the presence of Intel and other high-tech companies in ther region figure to be a major contributing factor.
