The Zoo Gets Blue!

The Folsom Zoo gained a new resident today... a hybrid bobcat named Blue, formerly a pet of an Elk Grove woman. The bobcat was half-bobcat, half-housecat, and caused quite a bit of excitement in the Elk Grove area, as it wandered around. The 13-year animal now calls the Folsom Zoo home.

Jurassic Zoo?

The Folsom City Zoo may not be getting a lot of new animals in the forseeable future, but some amazing new features may make it a great place to visit with kids. Among the ideas being tossed around in the master plan are a canyon zip line, as well as T-Rex skeleton and skeletons of other extinct animals.

2006 in Review

Folsom had a very busy year - the Zoo went through an expansion (with more coming), the new bridge is making progress, and the railroad block was approved. Folsom certainly had a busy 2006, but it is very likely that 2007 will be even busier.

Zoo Residents Get an Upgrade

The Folsom City Zoo is undergoing some serious changes... it's expanding, and some zoo residents are getting improved living quarters. The tigers are getting an expansion to their living area, and the wolves and coyotes are being relocated to a new area, previously closed off and undeveloped.

Fireworks Banned in 3 Parks

'Safe and Sane' fireworks are legal in all of Sacramento county, however the City of Folsom has banned fireworks in City Lions Park, Jack Kemp Community Park, and Lew Howard Park - for safety reasons, and to minimize disturbance to the Zoo residents.

Wolf Cubs Debut at Folsom Zoo

Joshua and Yucca, a couple of wolf cubs acquired from a Southern California breeder, are getting acquainted with their new digs at the Folsom Zoo. The cubs were described as accidental breedings, as they were part of a group of pups that were originally bred for the entertainment industry. Full story in the Telegraph.

Upgrades for Folsom Parks

The city is setting aside $4.1 million to upgrade some of its parks, mostly bringing them up to code. Old basketball courts will be torn out and re-done, picnic tables and benches will be upgraded, and unused tennis courts will be torn out. $2 million will be spent at the Folsom Zoo, for a new kitchen and employee changing room. No word yet on whether the city will finish any of its unfinished parks. Folsom Telegraph article

Folsom Zoo a Big Hit

The Folsom Zoo has long been a popular attraction in Folsom, even if it features some rather unexotic animals such as squirrels and chickens. However with the addition of a couple of new tigers and the expanded bear exhibit, the Folsom Zoo is quite a hit. Our own Craig Learoyd gives us a photo journal of the Folsom Zoo.

Mountain Lions and Tigers and Bears... Oh My!

The Folsom Zoo has been busy lately, with the addition of 2 new bears, and now, 2 new tigers as well. Welcome to Misty and Pouncer, two bengal tigers who were taken from a Southern California "rescue facility" that was poorly run, where the tigers were malnourished. See TheKCRAChannel.com and Folsom Telegraph for details.

City Gym Application Draws Fire

Despite a new sports complex being built, an aquatic center that is losing $400,000 annually, not enough money to finish local parks, and less money from the state, the City of Folsom is applying for a grant to build a new city gym at Lembi Park. Needless to say, many people don't feel it makes fiscal sense. More in the Bee.

2 More Bears on Way?

The Folsom Zoo has been undergoing a renovation on its bear exhibit, and even though it has lost 2 of its bears (Ursula and Brutus), it may soon see two more to help occupy the new facility. 2 bears are currently at the Nimbus Dam Fish Hatchery holding den, and will hopefully soon be there to enjoy 2 new pools, a stream and waterfall, all of which are part of the new exhibit, due to open in October. The Folsom Zoo Loses Brutus the Bear

Less than a year after Ursula the black bear passed away at the Folsom Zoo, her twin brother Brutus has passed as well. Brutus had a history of health problems and had to be put to sleep today, after he stopped eating as a result of stomach cancer. Ursula and Brutus came to the zoo a few years ago when a teenager Justin Barker $25,000 through a fundraiser to build a facility. More is in the Bee and the Telegraph.

Folsom Zoo Reaches Out to Educate

The Folsom Zoo, in an effort to educate young children, is offering several summer programs, in which children can learn about wildlife through crafts, games and such. The "ZooMobile", a travelling zoo of sorts, also travels throughout town to local schools and facilities to help reach out to children as well. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.

Folsom Zoo's Ursula the Bear dies at age 23

Ursula the bear, a popular black bear recently moved in to the Folsom Zoo, was put to sleep this week after an incurable infection got the best of her. Ursula is perhaps best known through then-teenager Justin Barker of Elk Grove, who raised enough money to move Ursula from her cage in Roseville to the Folsom Zoo in 1998. Ursula was one of 5 bears at the Folsom Zoo, and will be missed. More information can be found in the Sacramento Bee.
