4 ATM Thieves Arrested

Folsom Police arrested four people for conspiracy and robbery after using a replica handgun to rob a victim while he was using a local ATM. Michelle Tarpley, 18, of Rancho Cordova, Seth Briggs, 20 years-old of North Highlands, Guillermo Santana, 27 years-old of Sacramento, and Steven Tamberg, 23 years-old of Rancho Cordova, were all arrested for suspicion of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Overturned Big Rig on 50

Police and news vehicles are currently cleaning up an overturned big rig that has blocked eastbound US50 at Prairie City. The big rig was right by Prairie City Road and traffic has been backed up since 8 am to around Hazel. The accident is expected to be backup up until at least 11:15.

False Alarm - No Bomb

Folsom High parents and motorists got a bit of a scare today as a reported suspicious device on the Prairie City / Hwy 50 overpass brought in scores of police. The device was a traffic sensor. This incident does not appear to be connected with the pipe bomb case earlier this week.

'Active Shooter' Training at FLC

If you see police activity at Folsom Lake College, do not worry - they are participating in a simulated training exercise, including gunshots (presumably blanks) and explosions. The training is to help simulate the chaos of an urban attack. The training will be going on today and Friday.

Anderson Family, NAACP Criticize Police

The NAACP and family of Andre Anderson are demanding answers regarding the death of Andre Anderson. The coroner's cause of death may take several months, and police are not commenting on the matter until a cause of death is identified. The Anderson family wishes to be in more contact with investigators about the case.

Death of Folsom Teen Shocks Folsom

The body of Andre Anderson, a Folsom High junior, was found hanging from a tree in Big Foot park. Police Investigation is continuing, but the family feels it may have been an accidental death. Foul play has been ruled out.

3 Found Dead in Folsom Home

Three people have been found dead at 112 Wembley Court. An employee of Folsom Prison called when 2 co-workers did not show up for work; Folsom Police report that Laurence Moll shot and killed his long-time girlfriend, Bonnie Lathum, as well as her daughter, Teresa Contreras, before turning the gun on himself.

Tragedy on Iron Point

A 53-year old Shingle Springs woman was killed on Saturday, as her car was struck by a Dodge Stealth, by the Folsom Outlets. Police say 2 teens were racing along Iron Point, and have been arrested for vehicular manslaughter. The victim, Susan McNew, leaves behind a husband and 2 children.

Annual Report Now Available

In 2005, Folsom grew 5%, and violent crimes dropped 4%, though property crimes increased by 7%. The 2005 Folsom Annual Report is now avaliable from the city, where you can view crime reports, response times, and services provided fy Folsom Police.

Armed Robbery at Folsom Bank

Bank of America on Blue Ravine was robbed at gunpoint on Tuesday. The suspect was 5'6", reddish goatee and a husky build. Anyone who has any information is urged to call the police at 351-3340.

Four Sought in Robberies

Police are looking for a Nissan Altima with a Washington plate #263NFW. A robbery at Folsom Lake Bowl and a robbery on Folsom-Auburn Road a few minutes later were both reported with this plate number early Friday morning. Any information to these crimes, please call 355-7231.

Importing Transients?

The trickling effects of light rail are starting to appear. Residents (and homeless) have noticed a rise in the homeless population since light rail has come to town... will they stay? It appears that police presence and Folsom's homeless shelter are not keen on the prospect of chronic homelessness and loitering in city limits. More in the Bee.

Blocking Tracks Will Cost $200

Light Rail is about to begin service in Folsom, and Folsom Police will now begin enforcing laws against stopping on train tracks. Drivers cited for failing to stop at designated lines will be fined $200, since it is considered a red-light violation. Passenger service begins October 15, but operators will be training before then. Story in the Sacramento Bee.

A 9-year old girl was sexually assaulted at an apartment complex on Creekside Drive Sunday night. The suspect is white, early 20s, 5'9", medium build, with a shaved head and blonde beard. The suspect was wearing a brown short sleeve shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Folsom Police at 916-930-1098. Parolee Nabbed After Chase

Patrick Kelly, a 27-year old on his way to a treatment facility near Folsom Prison, escaped out of a transport van earlier today, and ended up at Orange Blossom Circle, where he asked to use a resident's phone. Resident Teresa Stanley became suspicious and fled to a neighbor's house, while Kelly stole her Toyota. Police later found and arrested him in Fair Oaks. Speed Limit Changes

Sibley Street and Bidwell Street now have 30 mph speed limits - a raise on Sibley, and a decrease on Bidwell. The reasoning? So police can use radar. Under state law, police cannot use radar on streets that are not legally qualified as residential streets due to the average speeds of motorists. Now they can, meaning they can enforce the speed limit more easily. Details in the Bee.

Mercy Folsom Seeks Helicopter Spot

Folsom is growing, and one of the needed changes to accomodate this growth is emergency facilities. Currently, when a helicopter landing is warranted at Mercy Folsom, it stops an intersection, snarling traffic and police resources. Jim Pelley is hosting a fundraising dinner on December 8, and he hopes to raise the $100,000 needed for the landing spot. Story in the Bee.

2 Killed in Car/Motorcycle Accident

2 20-year olds were killed in a car vs. motorcycle accident on Thursday. Jordan Tyler Barkey of Rancho Cordova and Carlene Baker of Cameron Park were both struck by a BMW at Briggs Ranch Rd. and East Natoma Blvd. Police are investigating whether street racing was a factor in the accident. 9/11 Remembrance Planned

The City of Folsom's Police and Fire Departments will hold their third annual memorial ceremony to honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11. The ceremony will be held at 48 Natoma St., directly in front of the former fire station adjacent to City Hall. The event includes a flag-raising, 21-gun salute and speeches by dignitaries. The public is invited to attend and participate in the remembrance ceremony.

Dam to Re-Open?

If given sufficient security to the Folsom Dam, the US Bureau of Reclamation may open up the Folsom Dam Road during peak commute hours. Police Chief Sam Spiegel is already designing a security plan with local and federal law enforcement in hopes of opening the road. Saddle Up!

Folsom's finest will be adding 2 new vehicles to its police squad, horses to be exact. Red and Rocky will be the latest additions, one owned by a police officer, and the other donated to the city. They will patrol areas such as Thursday Night Market, the Rodeo, parades, and school events. More in the Bee.

Traffic Calming Not Well Received By Motorists

The city's attempts at diverting traffic away from residential areas has failed, at least in the eyes of motorists. Drivers are routinely ignoring "no right turn" areas, more than 1 in 4 are breaking the law. Partially to blame are police officers for failing to issue citations, however one thing's for sure, traffic in Old Folsom is a mess. More in the Telegraph. In related news, a federal study is examining the environmental impact of the Dam Road closure in Folsom. Results won't be available until 2005.

10 More Police Officers Coming to Folsom

Thanks in part to a $750,000 grant from the federal government, Folsom will be able to add 10 more police officers to its staff, which is greatly needed with the expanding population of Folsom. In 1998, Folsom PD Response time was under 6 minutes, but has risen to almost 10 minutes in 2001. More in the Bee.

Pipe Bomb Explodes at Broadstone Plaza

Teens are said to be involved in a pipe bomb explosion in the Broadstone Marketplace behind Old Navy. On Monday afternoon, a homemade bomb exploded in a dumpster, causing a large hole. Police blocked off the center just to make sure there were no more explosives. There were no reported injuries. More on theKCRAChannel.com.

Folsom's City Budget Includes New Positions

Despite the economic problems of the state, the city of Folsom is benefitting from increased sales tax, water rates, sewer rates, garbage rates, and property taxes. With $12 million more to use than last year, the city is able to build a city library and downtown parking structure, and hire more employees. This includes 5 new police officers, 5 new crime analysts, and additional funds for the Fire Department. More is in the Bee.

Budget Workshop Today @ City Hall

The 2003-2004 preliminary budget for the city of Folsom will be discussed today (Wednesday, June 4) at City Hall, and is open to the public. The $142 million budget includes some new funding for areas such as parks, the library project, and police & fire departments. City Manager Martha Lofgren feels todays' budget is a "truly 'good news' budget proposal". More is in the Telegraph.

Running Around in an Orange Jumpsuit: Not Funny

Inspired by the hit TV show "Jackass", a couple of Loomis teens decided to pull a prank, by running around handcuffed in an orange jumpsuit by a rural road. A citizen called the police and soon a full-scale manhunt was ordered, complete with a lockdown of Folsom Prison, a police helicopter, patrol cars, and police dogs. The teens soon realized the err of their ways and ditched the jumpsuit and confessed to a parent. Police were not amused. More is in the Bee, KTVU-2

Dam Road Closure Costing City $500,000 a Year

Now that people have started settling in on old habits, the closure of the Dam Road is starting to hit the city financially. Folsom is now paying $10,000 more a week in police and traffic control, not to mention the impact on small businesses. Traffic on alternate routes are up 75%, and a 36% raise in accidents. The city is looking at a traffic consulting firm to see if they can find ways to alleviate these issues, but until another bridge is built, it is likely that Folsomites will have to endure a lot of traffic during peak commute hours. Folsom Teen Held in Intricate AOL Scam

Folsom teenager Jason Scott Kriscenski, 18, was arrested on April 3 after police found out he was stealing credit card information from AOL customers, buying gift cards, and then selling them on EBay. The teen created a pop-up window mimicing AOL, saying that it was time for them to renew their membership, and that they needed to give him his credit card information. The teenager was charged with 2 felonies - theft of credit card account information and unlawful use of card or account information. More is in today's Bee.

Mundy Murder Trial to Begin in June

San Quentin parolee Robert Mundy will go on trial for 2nd-degree murder of Folsom music teacher Aaron Farahmand on June 19. Mundy was evading police in a high-speed chase throughout Folsom, where he hit and killed Farahmand on Riley Street. The defense will try and spin the fact that the Folsom police officer who was chasing him was inexperienced. Mundy was driving with a blood-alcohol level of .26 at the time, more than 3 times the legal limit. More is in the Bee.

Home Invader Sought By Folsom PD

Folsom Police are looking for a 25-30 year old male, who had broken in to a California Hills home, and attacked a 25-year old woman with a small hammer. The victim was able to fend herself and scare off the intruder, however Police are asking residents to help identify the man. Full details and a sketch of the intruder are available via the Bee.

Folsom Police to Start Cracking Down on Motorists

Strict enforcement areas are now going to be enforced throughout the city of Folsom, as the Folsom Police Department attemps to make the streets a little more safe. Police expect to attack the situation with a three-prong approach - enforcement near school areas, commercial-vehicle violations, as well as all-around compliance of traffic laws. Specific areas of enforcement are on Folsom-Auburn Road from Inwood Road to Oak Avenue, East Natoma Street from Blue Ravine Road to Fargo Way and Blue Ravine from East Natoma to Oak Avenue Parkway. Papa Roach Video Hits the Net

Vacaville rock band Papa Roach recently did a video shoot at 3 locations throughout the Sacramento area, including Folsom's Rainbow Bridge. The video 'Time and Time Again' features the band doing an inpromptu rock concert at the locations, with police chasing them from spot to spot. The concerts were of course staged, but it created quite a buzz for a day while the band filmed there. View the video here. (requires Real Player)

Police May Examine High-Speed Chase Policy

The Folsom Police Department is set to review the September 6 incident in which a San Quentin parolee hit and killed a Folsom resident, as a result of a high-speed chase throughout the streets of Folsom. Anne Sedgwick, a businesswoman whose car was also struck during the chase, is questioning the pursuit policy herself. Folsom PD are looking at ways of ridding criminals off the streets, while at the same time, making sure pedestians and motorists are safe as well. More in the Sacramento Bee.

God Bless America

Even though New York and Washington DC are thousands of miles away, the world still feels the sting of Septemer 11, 2001. Many memorials are planned for the day - citizens are also asked to drive with their lights on, as well as wear red, white and blue during the day. Folsom Guitar Teacher Killed in Police Chase

Folsom resident Aaron Farahmand, 28, was an innocent victim of a high-speed police chase on Friday. Police were chasing Robert Mundy, a San Quentin parolee, who was speeding at 70 miles an hour along Riley Street, when Mundy's Ford pickup crashed in to Farahmand's Honda Accord. Farahmand was a very well-loved guitar teacher with 85 students. Donations in Farahmand's memory can be made to The Aaron Farahmand Memorial Fund, c/o Merchants National Bank, P.O. Folsom Police Department Offers 'Citizen's Academy'

The Folsom Police have started up a new program to involve citizens in the community - a 12-week course to get an in-depth view of law enforcement. 40 Folsom residents will get the opportunity to take this class, which offers a 2-hour police ride-along, as well as 2 hours at the dispatch center. Residents can lear all about local laws, and get an active view of the typical Folsom PD duties. The Academy starts August 29. More information is in the Bee.

Folsom Not Immune to Crime - Car Theft on Rise

Although Folsom is a fairly affluent community, it is not immune to crime. Even cars parked in their driveways pose as potential targets for would-be theives, and leaving them unlocked only invites crime to your neighborhood. Folsom police explain that common sense goes a long ways, from keeping your windows up and valuables out of plain sight to closing your garage doors in the evening. Folsom High School Hosts 'Every 15 Minutes' DUI Campaign

Every 15 minutes, someone dies from an alcohol-related car accident.

Folsom High students participated with Placer County Chaplaincy and local police in a national alcohol awareness project on Wednesday, April 24. A staged car accident was displayed in front of Folsom High, where 2 students "died" and others were badly injured. Some students were called out of class every 15 minutes as one of the 'walking dead' to symbolize the statistics. An assembly was later held at the school where students learned first-hand the effects of driving under the influence.
