One of
our personal favorites, the "Crackling Cactus" (TNT). |
What is it
about fireworks that makes us want to fork out a day's wages for
a few "oohs" and "ahhs?" Well, I don't have an answer for you
except to say that it's a condition that seems to plague most of
us as we anticipate our nation's big birthday party. I do have
some tips for you, though, if you're looking to make an educated
choice on this year's fireworks purchase.
-
Support a charity.
Yes, every fireworks purchase you make supports some local
charity. So, make it a point to blow your budget in support
of your favorite one.
Here's the location of Folsom Fireworks stands and the
charity each one supports.
-
Check
the ratings.
Every year Sacbee puts out their ratings of local fireworks so
be on the lookout for that. Also, don't forget to
check the forums where members discuss their personal
favorites.
-
Bigger
isn't always better
(though it is usually more expensive). This is the problem
with some of the large assortments. Some of the $40 fountains
are no more than 4 $2 fireworks bundled together. Besides, it
lasts longer if you do one smaller one at a time.
-
Pool
your money.
Don't be shy, your neighbor feels the same way you do about
wasting all of that money. Go to the stand with your neighbor
and each spend half as much as you normally would. Then, do
your fireworks together. Better yet, get a couple of
neighbors in on the action.
-
Make a
budget.
Decide
what you'll spend before you get there and take just that
amount of cash. You don't want to regretfully come in the
door with the "Block Party" and have to explain to your wife
that you got $500 worth of fireworks for only $399.
-
Do
your homework.
Get the
flyer in the newspaper or pick up a flyer at the stand and
figure out what you want before you walk up and get
overwhelmed picking out a little of everything.
Once
you've made your purchase, don't forget these tips:
-
Keep
it safe.
Don't do fireworks in the park or near dry grass. Also, keep a
bucket of water nearby.
-
Clean
up after the cool down.
Once your
fireworks have cooled down, please clean up your garbage.
Let's keep Folsom clean.
-
Take
some cool pictures.
