Free Museum Day Saturday

Explore the Folsom History Museum free of charge on Saturday - it's free museum day, anf Folsom History Museum is one of many that's participating. You can check out the museum on Sutter Street from 10-6 and then walk down to Pioneer Village on Wool Street, also free and open 10-4.

Sutter Street Steakhouse Open

The long-awaited 5-star Sutter Street Steakhouse is finally open on Sutter Street. The building is in the new Folsom Electric Building, on the top of the hill (and a pretty nice view from what we hear). Early reviews are good! Feel free to post your own.

Strikes Coming?

Folsom may soon be home to 2 bowling alleys... long rumored on our message boards, the City of Folsom has updated their "upcoming businesses" page to confirm that Strikes Family Entertainment Center is negotiating with the developer to take over the old Circuit City Building.

Smashburger Coming

Smashburger, a Denver-based burger chain, will be coming in May 2010 to Folsom and Citrus Heights. The chain is known for cooking their burgers then "smashing in" the flavor. It is unknown where in town the chain will be.

Rollover Accident on East Bidwell

5 were sent to the hospital in a horrific crash on East Bidwell. An eyewitness account tells that a Mercedes with no lights on and driving erratically ran a red light and was t-boned by a Dodge Durango. The Mercedes driver and her son are currently in the hospital with serious injuries; she is suspected of driving under the influence.

Great Jazz Weekend

This weekend is the annual Folsom Jazz Festival, hosted by the Folsom Music Boosters. Some of the best jazz bands in the nation will be performing at Folsom High School and Rolling Hills Christian Church, including the University of North Texas One O'clock Lab Band, who will be playing at the Grammys right after the Festival.

Intel Plans 6-Acre Solar Field

Intel has announced plans for a 6-acre solar field on its Folsom campus, which will be one of the largest non-utility ground mounts in California. The solar installations are expected to be completed over the next 7 months.

Found Body ID'd

A decomposed body recently found by a few kids was finally identified. 44-year-old Earl Barrett Jr. was a frequent visitor of a Briggs Ranch resident and likely died of natural causes. Barrett was a drifter who would often disappear without notice.

Local Skaters Go "Mega Dega"

Local skateboarders Nic and Tristan Puehse have been hard at work filming in the Cayman Islands. Their first film "Go Mega Dega" looks to be released to DVD this spring, with another one on the way for theatrical release. You can see Nic and Tristan skating at Cummings Park - they skate 6-7 hours a week.

2009 was a wild year, but the good news is that Folsom is in decent shape, financially. Unemployment is at 5.7%, while neighbors like Rancho Cordova are as high as 14.2. The mayor is concerned about the state budget's impact on local city levels, as 2010 doesn't look to be much better from the public sector.

WalMart Goes Bagless

Folsom and Citrus Heights Wal-Mart stores decided to finally deploy the bagless pilot - encouraging customers to provide their own recyclable bags. If no bag is brought, customers can buy bags at 15 cents each. The pilot was originally slated for fall, but pushed back so the holiday shopping would not skew the results.

17,000 Without Power

A blown circuit breaker is to blame for 17,000 people without power tonight... A turkey (presumably well done) caused the breaker to blow. Power was back on after about 30 minutes.

Teen Turns Himself In

A Citrus Heights teen was arrested for auto theft and burglary, after he turned himself in to Folsom Police ad Ed Michell Park. The boy was a passenger in a stolen Honda Civic that police had unsuccessfully sought after a short pursuit on December 30.

Cop Injured in Wipeout

A motorcycle officer is recovering from injuries sustained on the 26th when making a U-turn in pursuit of a driver caught on their cell phone. The 10-year veteran sustained a broken leg and clavicle, a dislocated thumb and a concussion. The driver got away.

Folsom Police are offering free rides home tonight if you'd partaken in a bit too much cheer for the new year. Just call (916) 355-7231 and they will take you home to Folsom, Granite Bay, El Dorado Hills, Rancho Cordova, Orangevale or Fair Oaks. The free service is from 9pm - 2:30am.

Creekside Investigation now Homicide

The investigation of a woman's death on Creekside Drive has been upgraded to a homicide investigation and police are requesting assistance from the public.

Guard Stabbed in Prison Attack

A Folsom Prison guard was slashed in the neck and received 68 stitches, though he has been discharged from the hospital. Jonathan McClaurin, 33, attacked the officer inside one of the maximum-security units and slashed the man's neck, jaw and ear.

Hollywood Video Closed

Employees of Hollywood Video were surprised to see that it is shutting its doors as of today. There is no official notice as to where to bring rented videos if you have movies or games checked out.
