New 42 Acre Park Planned

A new park has been approved by city council, a 42-acre site at Broadstone Parkway and Golf Links Drive. A major-league size baseball field will be included, which will help alleviate the demand for the one we have now. Details in today's Telegraph.

Jill Solberg, 1941 - 2005

Jill Solberg was a teacher, counselor, vice principal, and finally, principal of Folsom High School. Solberg was principal during a time of incredible expansion of the high school, as they moved from a small, 800 student campus to the large, 2,300 student campus now on Prairie City Road. She died of cancer on March 19, age 63. The memorial service will take place on Thurday, 7 pm, at Folsom High School. Story in the Bee.

Alcohol Banned From Parks

Even though being drunk in public is already a crime, City Council found it necessary to make it illegal to possess alcohol in Folsom's parks, parking lots, and streets. Residents wishing to drink alcohol in parks or on the street will need to pay for a permit, effective April 21. The permits will cost between $5 and $25. Details in the Bee.

Folsom Stage Line to Shuffle Service

With Folsom's new light rail stations coming in, the city has decided to expand its services within city limits and discontinue shuttles downtown. Intel will also start creating incentives for its employees to commute via light rail. More in the Bee.

$90K A Year Can't Buy a Home

Folsom's housing prices have shot through the roof lately - 10 years ago, the average home sold for $194,000. Now it is up to $475,000. The influx of residents moving from the Bay Area has made housing prices really shoot up, and new homeowners are having a hard time finding a way to afford a home in Folsom. Story in the Telegraph.

Bigger Vets Memorial Planned

A final decision on the planned Folsom Veterans Memorial is planned for Tuesday. The Library Commission, Arts and Cultural Commission, and Parks and Recreation Commission will all give their comments from the proposal; the new memorial will be part of the planned Library at City Park. Folsom Funnel Cloud?

Folsom had some wet and wild weather today, with an abundance of rain, hail, lightning... even a reported funnel cloud. Lightning caused the outage of stoplights on East Bidwell, and contributed to some traffic accidents. Story on News 10

Cox Hopes to Streamline Bridge

In an effort to speed up the process of building the replacement bridge for the Folsom Dam Road, Senator Dave Cox has proposed a new bill which would require permits be approved within 75 days. A similar bill of this nature died on the floor last year, however Cox is willing to give it a shot. Details in the Bee.

Alcohol Ban Proposed

Planning on drinking a glass of wine at Concert in the Park? $100 fine. Having a frosty brew at a neighborhood 4th of July party? $100 fine. If the City Council gets their way, alcohol will soon be banned from public streets, sidewalks, parks, and pretty much everything else. Details in this week's Telegraph.

Folsom Healthy Families Forum Tomorrow Night

The Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Kaiser Hospital & Parks and Recreation are sponsoring a Healthy Families Forum on Thursday, March 17 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center. This free event for parents and young people focuses on preventing youth substance abuse, promotes positive alternatives for youth, counseling resources, as well as campus clubs/resources. Come one, come all!

Parkway Residents Demand a School

Despite having 3 elementary schools within a 1 mile radius of the Parkway development, kids from this area are bussed to Theodore Judah Elementary. Despite this, it will be at least 2 years before the school districts can be re-zoned, and it would cost around $15 million to buy land in the area for Parkway residents. $30 Million Gamble

Folsom is banking heavily on the success of light rail. With the newly-planned Railroad Block in the mix, the city is hoping that what is now a parking lot will soon be a hub of activity, reminiscent of the city's gold rush days. The Railroad Block will focus around the restored turntable near Sutter Street. Full story in the Bee.

That's a Big Bridge

The Jim Konopka Volunteer Bridge was unveiled Sunday, a 300-foot long bridge that spans over Humbug Creek. Konopka led a team of volunteers who constucted this huge bridge, and the city decided to name it after him for his service to the community. Details in Sunday's Bee.

Light Rail to EDH?

We don't even have our new light rail stations finished yet, and already talks are of extending the services up to El Dorado Hills. Whether existing rail or new rail would be used is unknown, but officials are testing the waters to see if the demand is there. Details in the Telegraph.

Running Out

Folsom is down to under 500 lots available to develop on before it is built out. Given that situation, Folsom's leaders are pushing to annex land south of US 50, with development beginning in less than 3 years. With this land, Folsom will have room for more than 12,000 homes... and lots of taxpayer dollars. Full story in the Business Journal.
