Folsom Aims to Please Bikers, Pedestrians

In an effort to make the city of Folsom more pedestrian-friendly, it is holding community workshops to see what the residents want in terms of sidewalks. Specifically, the Historic district seems to be lacking walking areas, though some are concerned sidewalks would take away from its unique character. More in the Sacramento Bee.

Residents, Owners to Spruce up Sutter Street

Sutter Street, long a popular tourist area, has been in need of a pick-me-up since the Dam Road closure. The Folsom Historic District Association has launched a 4-point plan - organizing, designing, promoting, and economic restructuring, which will hopefully spur more visitors. Full story

Take the Apple Bus!

It's fall, and we all know what that means in the foothills - Apple Hill time. Many families make it a habit to check out the hills of Placerville to pick some pumpkins, check out the fall foliage, and eat some oh-so-good apple delights. Apple Hill is now hosting a shuttle bus on the weekends until October 31 - starting at ending at Schnell School, a new bus every 15-30 minutes.

Asbestos Concerns in the Hills

Recently discovered asbestos (the natural forming kind) while doing preliminary groundwork for Lago Vista High School has prompted builders and homeowners in the Southeast area of Folsom to take caution when digging in the dirt. The common rule of thumb is to water down the dirt so it doesn't kick up dust and re-cover the soil when you are done. Full details in the Bee.

Road Closure Causes Another Bankruptcy

Slowly but surely, the closure of the Folsom Dam Road is taking its toll on merchants affected with major traffic issues. The latest victim is Granite Bay Jewelers, which has seen business decline by 35% since the closure. Many Sutter Street businesses have been hit hard as well, and there is no relief in sight. City Council Ponders Fate of 30 Acres

30 acres of land, adjacent to Folsom High School, are up for grabs. What is now a cross-country track may soon be slated for low-income housing, which is not making students or residents in Prairie Oaks happy. It may also be purchased for a private school, though the City Manager claims the city has obligations for affordable housing. Full story in the Telegraph.

Light Rail Delayed

Light Rail to Folsom's historic district has been pushed back yet again from April 2005 to October 2005, due to property negotiations. With the Dam Road closure and increasing traffic along Highway 50, this is not good news for commuters. When the stations open, a trip from Folsom to Downtown Sac should take 40 minutes, the same as driving. Details on TheKCRAChannel.com

Folsom Dam Not Sufficient

The water stored from the Folsom Dam may be sufficient for now, however when Sacramento County's population is expected to boom by 2030, farmers will not get their water 45% of the time, if Folsom Lake is the only source. Representative John Doolittle has long advocated an Auburn Dam, however since that may be a political impossibility, Doolittle is turning his focus to a smaller Alder Dam, which would be a $63 million project Details

Johnny Cash Inspires Musicians

One of Johnny Cash's most famous concerts was his concert at Folsom Prison. Now, musicians are paying homage to the late great artist, by visiting the prison and treating the inmates to a free convert. Bob Dylan imitator Joel Gilberts did this recently, and it was a big hit. Intel Folsom Turns 20

In 1984, Folsom was a rural town on the outskirts of the county, whose economy was fueled by Folsom Prison. Intel decided to build a satellite campus at what is now Prairie City Road and Iron Point - in the middle of nowhere at the time. Today Intel is the largest employer in the Sacramento Valley, and still has a little room to grow. Full Story.
