Traffic Still a Major Concern
The traffic in Folsom has not gotten any better. Unfortunately, not many solutions are in place to ease both residents and drivers alike. The historic district carries the brunt of the load, with high volumes of cars speeding through. The costs for traffic calming range from $6,000 to $300,000. More in the Bee.

Folsom Microbrewery Coming Soon
Folsom will soon be home to a new microbrew, Lockdown Brewing Company, home of the "Folsom Prison Brews". The label will look familiar to some - it's the guard tower to Folsom Prison! Big Bowl Bash
California Board Life, a new skateboarding shop on Riley Street, held its first annual Folsom Bowl Bash, a competition of events that attracted 40 local skateboarders and many more spectators. The new event was held at Cummings Family Park, a new park in town for extreme sports enthusiasts. Check out the Folsom Telegraph for details.

Folsom is expanding at an exponential rate... one may have a hard time keeping track of the growth. The latest businesses to jump on board will be in the Trail Creek Crossing center at East Bidwell and Creekside Drive. Inside will be Quizno's, Cafe Latte, and a Game Cage (video game store). The Little Engine That Could
Perhaps the most popular attraction at the Folsom City Lions Park is its miniature railroad track, along with the miniature train that goes along with it. Terry Gold (the "Choo Choo Man") has been operating the train for 14 years now, and hopes to expand it when the library is built. See the full story in the Bee.

Folsom Growth Initiative Thrown Out
A grassroots effort was put together within the last year, in an effort to curb growth south of US 50 significantly. The initiative was aimed to add two lanes to Highway 50, preserve all oak trees, maintain 50% of the land in farming, and requiring voter approval for expansion. Folsom Family Hit Hard
Last weekend, a Folsom family was shocked with the news that five family members and a close family friend were instantly killed in a car accident. Left behind are grandparents, now without any grandchilden, not to mention Mercy Folsom, where 4 of them worked throughout the years. Memorial services begin on Saturday. Read the full story here.

Suspicious Death
Folsom Police are investigating the death of 21-year old Guy Pronovost, who was found near a pool of blood and a go-ped ar Pioneer Way and Flower Drive. It is unknown if the rider had an accident or was assaulted. More details in the Bee.

Folsom Triathlon a Big Success
One of Folsom's newest events, the Folsom International Triathlon, came and went without much notice from the local community, however it was a great success. Hundreds of competitors came out to swin, bike and run around Folsom on Sunday. Details in the Folsom Telegraph

Folsom Man Charged With $20M Fraud
Timothy Charles Mattos, 32, a former employee of Verizon Wireless, has been charged with scheming to steal $20 million in prepaid phone cards. Mattos, a customer service rep, had access to the system and would sell minutes to third parties. Details in the Sacramento Business Journal * USA Today article

Folsom Growth Initiative Faces Challenges
Though the signatures were gathered and it appeared on its way to the November ballot, the Folsom growth initiative aimed at curbing sprawl has appeared to hit a snag. A group of Folsom citizens have filed a lawsuit in attempt to stop the initiative, citing a failure to provide info about agricultural policies. A decision is expected next week. Details

Eight people, including 2 incumbents, plan on running for city council this November. Jeff Starsky and Eric King's council seats are up for re-election, and 6 challengers (Ronald Carter, Robert Giacometti, Michael Gordon, Jim Karnis, Alfredo Manfredi, and Doug Udell) are hoping to take their seats. New Bridge By '07
In what is considered a very quick turnaround time, a replacement bridge for the Folsom Dam Road may be built and open by as soon as 2007. Though this is at least 3 years away, this is a short time frame in the scheme of things. The new bridge will be 4 lanes, with bike and pedestrian crossing as well. Farmer's Market Every Sunday
Folsom has had its own certified farmer's market for a little over a month now. Every Sunday in old Folsom (by the historic railroad turntable), residents and visitors can stock up on fresh produce, some picked the same morning. In addition to being cheaper than the grocery stores, the farmers earn more by cutting out the middle man. More in the Sacramento Bee.

West Nile Hits Folsom
Though it is only one reported case, a dead bird was found in Folsom near Riley & East Bidwell that tested positive for the West Nile virus. The bird could have flown in from anywhere, however it is important to realize that it is now in the area. WNV can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in humans. 2 Competing Initiatives on Ballot
In what is likely to confuse the heck out of voters, there are 2 separate initiatives on the November ballot regarding Folsom's sphere of influence of land south of US 50. The city-sponsored initiative would codify environmental standards on the land; The competing ballot initiative would require 2 more lanes to Highway 50, 100% of oak woodlands to be preserved, and 50% of the land to be kept for agricultural use. Traffic Signal May be a Compromise
Residents are not happy with any traffic during rush hour on Sibley Street. Commuters are not happy with being funneled in to 1 main road. The city is meeting them in the middle by installing a traffic light at Glenn & Sibley, with strict enforcement of the 25 MPH residential speed limit. More in the Telegraph.

A Taste of SoCal
Folsom and Roseville continue to grow and expand with new franchises, this time with a new BJ's Restaurant & Brewery, due to be built in the Broadstone area by as soon as November. Vlade & Peja to Continue Camp
Vlade Divac, the former Sacramento King who recently signed with the arch-rival Los Angeles Lakers, has announced that his "Vlade & Peja" Basketball camp in Folsom will still continue, even though he will no longer be a King. The camp, now in its 5th year in Folsom, has been a tremendous success for Sacramento Area youngsters.
