Upgrades for Folsom Parks

The city is setting aside $4.1 million to upgrade some of its parks, mostly bringing them up to code. Old basketball courts will be torn out and re-done, picnic tables and benches will be upgraded, and unused tennis courts will be torn out. $2 million will be spent at the Folsom Zoo, for a new kitchen and employee changing room. No word yet on whether the city will finish any of its unfinished parks. Folsom Telegraph article

Tourism in Full Swing

The closure of the Folsom Dam Road has caused the Folsom Tourism Bureau to do some damage control - namely in the form of TV time in the Bay Area and a new website. The funds came from a new 2% tax on local hotels. VisitFolsom.Com is the new city "tourism" website, which oddly looks familiar to another popular Folsom website we know of... (full story)

Citizens Dedicated to Improving Folsom

Whether you are in favor of them or not, one thing is for sure: there have been a gamut of grassroots campaigns to change Folsom this year. One campaign was to oust four city council members (it failed), a new campaign is underway to vote on the future of the library (they are gathering signatures), and another to vote on development south of US 50 (gathering signatures). These campaigns have not been short of controversy, however the drive of each of these groups has been significant. Most groups involved have been active on our message boards to help spread the word.

Emma's Place Finds a Home

When travelling south on Lake Natoma Crossing, many saw off to the right and old, boarded up house on stilts, and asked what it was. It is Emma's Place, the only 19th-century house still in Folsom north of Sutter Street. It has been a brothel, a school house, a dance school, and a bar. It finally has a permanent foundation on Reading Street, and can begin its restoration. Full Story

Mello-Roos Explained

So, you're in a relatively new development, and rolled in to you mortgage payment is a monthly "Mello-Roos" tax... however many aren't sure just what this money goes towards, and why we must pay it. Due to a 1978 law, public agencies could not fund many new projects until a senator and assemblyman passed a 1982 law that would create bonds for these projects. Read all about it in the Folsom Telegraph.
