FCUSD Looks to Feel the Pinch
Folsom-Cordova School District is bracing for the inevitable news: $6.5 million in spending is expected to be cut from the budget. Folsom's City Budget Includes New Positions
Despite the economic problems of the state, the city of Folsom is benefitting from increased sales tax, water rates, sewer rates, garbage rates, and property taxes. With $12 million more to use than last year, the city is able to build a city library and downtown parking structure, and hire more employees. This includes 5 new police officers, 5 new crime analysts, and additional funds for the Fire Department. More is in the Bee.Labels: Folsom Fire Department, Folsom Library, Folsom Police
Doolittle & Matsui Come to Agreement
Reaching the conclusion that Auburn Dam is politically impossible, Representatives John Doolittle and Robert Matsui have come to an agreement over water management. Doolittle agreed to go forward supporting a $250 million raise of Folsom Dam, so long as it also included comparable water supply improvements in Placer & El Dorado Counties. This decade-old issue seems to be drawing near an end, as Doolittle & Matsui are both very influential in Congress and it is hoped they will be able to create enough support for the project. $50 Million Bridge Draws Nearer
HR-901, otherwise known as the Folsom Dam Road Bridge bill, passed another hurdle by narrowly being approved by the House Resources Committee 22-20. The $50 bridge may have to be of 2 options: a 2-lane bridge 100% funded by the federal government, or a 4-lane bridge that the City of Folsom has to pay 20% for. Next up is a floor vote; if passed, the bridge could be here as soon as 2005. More in the Telegraph.Labels: Dam Road

Folsom General Plan Needs Updating
The City of Folsom has been growing so much in the last few years, it has already approaching capacity. With the closure of the Dam Road and low-income housing now in the mix, the city looks to the future for planning. By 2009, the city should have almost 70,000 residents, up from 53,000 in 2000. Some of the key elements to be looked at include land use, traffic, open space, and housing. More is in today's Bee.Labels: Dam Road

Folsom Happy to Have Additional Sales Taxes
While some may be grumbling about the sudden expansion of the city of Folsom, city officials are likely breathing a sigh of relief in tough economic times. With lots of state funding likely in question with California's economic crisis, retail stores are coming to the rescue in the form of sales tax. Folsom's $142 million budget includes a 14% increase in sales tax. More is in the Bee.

City Council Borrowing Money to Build Library
One year after Folsom residents voted not to have a special tax just for a city library, Folsom City Council decided to borrow the money needed and dig in to the city's general fund to pay for it. After learning that chances of getting a state grant were slim with the statewide budget crisis, residents will still pay for it one way or another. Kerri Howell was the sole member of city council who opposed this decision. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Lake at Capacity - 466 feet above sea level
Folsom residents that have been to the lake recently have seen something the city has not seen in some time: a capacity-level lake. With the late rains and snowfall in April, water has been flowing at a rapid pace, causing boat ramps and parking lots to fill with water. While boaters of the lake have loved the increased surface water level, it has caused an issue, since some boat launches and parking lots have ended up underwater. More is in the Bee.

$600,000 Down the Drain
Debbie English-Deason learned the hard way... make sure you get the city's blessing in writing before you start work. English-Deason spent over $600,000 in restoring a house in the historic district, after planning staff recommended approval of Decadence Spa. A similar spa is located on Percifer Street, which was approved in March 2000. Unfortunately, neighbors opposed, and the city then denied the appeal 5-0. More is in the Bee.
