Railroad Block Proposal Denied

A proposed development for the Folsom Railroad Block was denied by city council, citing not enough retail and commercial space in the plan. A 100-room hotel and 20,000 square feet of retail space was part of the proposal, along with 290 residential units. While residents were happy with the decision, they also urged caution for the proposed Railroad Block, calling for an economic study of the district. More is in the Telegraph and the Bee.

Every Day is Family Day in Folsom

City Council Member Eric King proposed that Monday evenings be set aside as a family night for city workers, by limiting meetings and activities to other nights of the week, freeing up Monday nights to spend with family. After a long debate, city council agreed time spent with family is important, so now, every day is family day. Not that it means anything, it just means that the city officially stands that we are all free to set aside time to spend with our families. More is in the Folsom Telegraph and the Bee.

Dam Road Closure Costing City $500,000 a Year

Now that people have started settling in on old habits, the closure of the Dam Road is starting to hit the city financially. Folsom is now paying $10,000 more a week in police and traffic control, not to mention the impact on small businesses. Traffic on alternate routes are up 75%, and a 36% raise in accidents. The city is looking at a traffic consulting firm to see if they can find ways to alleviate these issues, but until another bridge is built, it is likely that Folsomites will have to endure a lot of traffic during peak commute hours. More is in the Bee.

No Raise = Wage Cut?

Folsom-Cordova School District is apparently just as prone to cost-cutting measures as the private sector. Joining the ranks of Intel, HP and many other companies in the greater Sacramento area, the school district will not be handing out wage increases this year to many of its employees. Some staff feel the lack of a wage increase equals a pay cut, since they were expecting at least a 1.5% cost of living increase. More is in the Telegraph.

It Will Be Ready... Will it Be Open?

Sandra Gallardo Elementary in the Prairie Oaks subdivision appears to be on schedule to be finished by fall of 2003, but the classrooms could have been unused and vacant for a year. With the budget crunch, many school districts are being forced to delay the openings of brand-new schools, in an effort to save money. FCUSD officials had considered delaying the opening of the school, however realized that not opening it would be far too damaging politically. More is in the Bee.

Mine Shaft Making Way For Auto Recovery Facility

Those of us who commute regularly to and from Sacramento from Folsom have likely seen the Mine Shaft Entertainment Center come and go, and now, come back. The Mine Shaft is back in a sense; the miniature golf course will remain, as will an arcade, but the rest of the place is turning in to an auto recovery facility and perhaps even an auto sales facility in the future. The facility will be used for storage and pickup of repossessed and returned lease vehicles. More is in the Bee.

Slow Down on Oak Avenue!

Oak Avenue, which has become a popular 2-lane road between Orangevale and Folsom, looks to find ways of slowing down traffic. Lowering the speed limit is an option (the current is 40 mph), as is traffic lights and more stop signs. Horseback riders, pedestrians, and commuters have used this road together, and when combined with speeding, leads to accidents. More is in the Bee.
