Folsom-Cordova to Cut 98 Jobs

Tough times call for tough measures. Facing a state-wide budget cut, the Folsom-Cordova School District have decided to cut 98 jobs off its payroll. The school district was largely able to do this by removing the 20:1 teacher/student ratio that is currently mandated. Calisornia School Employees Association has already filed suit for unfair labor practices. More is in the New Folsom Telegraph website.

Affordable Housing Issues Continue

As the city seeks to fulfill the last of its affordable housing needs, more and more residents are pushing back. The latest group to oppose the zoning are Natoma Station residents - they are not in favor of development of 13 acres of land currently owned by Intel. The tree-lined area currently serves as a buffer between the neighborhood and existing developments, not to mention the fact that the South Folsom area contains a large majority of low-income housing re-zones. More is in the Bee.

Ose Looks to Get a 4-Lane Bridge

With the impending traffic issues that will result from the Folsom Dam Road closure, Representative Doug Ose is seeking an additional 4-lane bridge spanning over the American River. The proposal has been mired in the fight between the Auburn Dam proponents and those wishing to raise Folsom Dam in the past, giving uncertainty to the bridge. Ose now plans on filing a separate bill, though it is still uncertain. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Prison to Count Towards Low-Income Housing?

Don't laugh, but Assemblyman Dave Cox is pushing to pass a bill which would virtually give Folsom exemption on affordable housing. Cox proposes to count beds in Folsom Prison towards the city's affordable-housing goals, which would practically meet Folsom's low-income housing needs. Unfortunately, as the legislature is largely Democrat-ruled, the bill would have very little chance of passing. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Wood & Lumber to Shut its Doors Forever

No longer a small store in a small town, Folsom Lumber & Building Supply has decided to call it quits. Since 1880, the business had been selling lumber and has gone under name changes and moved locations, but the customer service was always top-notch. Unfortunately, with Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement stores in town, it could no longer compete. Friday will be the store's last day - stop by at noon for cake and music, and wish the owners well. More in Sunday's Bee.

Folsom Dam Road to Shut Down Indefinitely

Take a last stroll over the Folsom Dam Road - it may be the last chance you get. Officials have decided that on February 28th, it will shut down Folsom Dam Road indefinitely, and most are speculating for good. Citing terrorism concerns, the Dam Road will now only be available to maintenance vehicles. After 9/11, the Dam was shut down for public tours, and large vehicles had been banned from crossing. Motorists must now cross over the Rainbow Bridge. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Dam Raise Funding Reduced

Design work funding for the Folsom Dam raise has been cut to $1.27 million, in an effort to reduce spending. Republican representative John Doolittle was responsible for the cut, as he maintains his goals of re-starting the Auburn Dam project. Doolittle still feels Auburn Dam would be Sacramento's best bet for flood control, not a Folsom Dam raise. The outlook for the dam raise remains uncertain. More in the Bee.

More Water Being Released from Folsom Dam

In an effort to keep salt water from entering the Delta, Nimbus and Folsom Dam are releasing an extra 2,000 cubic feet of water per second from each of the dams. In order to keep fresh water fish alive in the delta, water is needed to flow from the mountains, or else salt water creeps in to the delta. Dry weather in recent weeks have kept the water flow minimal. Folsom Dam is currently releasing 5,500 cubic feet of water per second.

Garbage & Sewer Rates to Go Through the Roof

In a move that will increase sewer rates by 420% and garbage rates by 50%, Folsom City Council found it prudent to increase Folsom residents' utility bills until 2008. The sewer rate increase will cover operations and maintenance costs. The garbage rate increase will go towards a city-wide recycling program. Though Folsom's garbage gets recycled at Folsom prison, operations costs have risen. It has been rumored that the city is actually losing money on the prison recycling program. More is in the Bee.
