Alcohol Banned at Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma

Recent incidents at Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma have forced authorities to take measures to prevent excessive alcohol use at the lake. Although boaters and campers will be allowed to drink on the lake, those who are on the shore or at the picnic grounds will no longer be able to drink alcohol. A spike in DUIs and drunk in public arrests have caused the ban of alcohol, which saw a significant increase in the 2002 season. More is in the Bee, and Fox 40 News.

Folsom Railroad Museum Rides Back in to Town

After a couple smaller-scale ventures at Ashland Station and American River Shopping Plaza, the Folsom Railroad museum hopes this will be it's final stop, on Wool Street next to the Chamber of Commerce Building. Inside a 1952 railcar, the museum is full of old photographs, railroad artifacts, and even copies of hand-drawn maps by Theodore Judah. Volunteers are even busy at work restoring old railcars right by the museum. The museum is open from 11-4 on weekends. More is in the Bee.

Mundy Murder Trial to Begin in June

San Quentin parolee Robert Mundy will go on trial for 2nd-degree murder of Folsom music teacher Aaron Farahmand on June 19. Mundy was evading police in a high-speed chase throughout Folsom, where he hit and killed Farahmand on Riley Street. The defense will try and spin the fact that the Folsom police officer who was chasing him was inexperienced. Mundy was driving with a blood-alcohol level of .26 at the time, more than 3 times the legal limit. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Couple Makes a 'Cool' Investment

A Folsom couple was looking for interesting investment options and fell in love with downtown Cool, California. The quaint little town off of Highway 49 has a handfull of little shops, one as old as from the 1880s, and the Masouris family felt they wanted to purchase it. The couple sold several restaurants in the Bay Area, and plan on opening a new restaurant in Folsom soon. More is in the Bee.

Boundaries for Prairie Oaks Elementary Draws Ire for Folsom Residents

Many concerned parents showed up on Wednesday January 22, to review and voice their displeasure over proposed boundary changes for Prairie Oaks Elementary. Planned affordable housing in the area has also caused some confusion, as they will need to be considered as well in the boundary changes. Some parents were concerned about being stuck in areas that get shifted around too much, while others were more concerned with making sure their children end up in the new elementary school. More information is in today's Bee.

Try a New Place to Eat Today!

Though Folsom has no shortage of Starbucks or McDonald's, there are many smaller restaurants that have a great selection of food and beverages. Try a new place to eat lunch this week - for a great workday lunch, Jenny's Palace has the best chinese food in town. In the evening, may we suggest Hacienda for some great appetizers and happy hour. Finally, on the weekends, take the wife out to Bailie's for a martini and a romantic dinner. More food suggestions can be found in MyFolsom.Com's Restaurant Guide, which is growing every week!

Budget Crunch Keeps Hitting Folsom... Latest Casualty: Light Rail

The state's budget crisis has forced many projects to be pushed to the curb, and funding will be seriously scaled back for every department in the state. The latest department to get hit was the Department of Transportation, which Governor Davis has proposed more than $1 Billion in cuts. $139 Million in cuts will directly impact the Sacramento Valley, meaning the Folsom light rail project will likely get seriously delayed or scrapped altogether. The Man in Black

In 1956, Johnny Cash put Folsom on the map with his #1 Billboard hit, "Folsom Prison Blues". If nothing else, Folsom is well known for its maximum-security prison, with many thanks to Johnny Cash. Though he never shot a man in Reno just to watch him die, it still is a catchy tune, and one of Cash's most famous songs. Click here to read a little bit about it.

State May Slash Affordable Housing Budget

Low-Income housing critics may be interesting in hearing that due to the State's budget crisis, the $500 million budget set aside for affordable housing may be cut. What this means is that low-income housing may not be a safe option for many cities, including Folsom. Since affordable housing is not a popular issue with many California cities, it stands on top of the list of funds to be cut to be placed back in to the state's general fund. More on News10.Net.

New Hotel Adds Controversy

A proposed hotel behind the Folsom theaters is drawing fire from preservationists, since the rock pilings that currently reside there have historical significance. The pilings date back to the gold rush era, and are a reminder of Folsom's beginnings in the mid-19th century. The land has been approved for rezone, however the location for the hotel is not final.
