Thank you for the
opportunity to respond to your concerns and a subject so important
to me.
As a member of the
City Council for the past seven and a half years, I have experienced
tremendous disappointment in trying to build a new library.
First it was trying to educate my colleagues; then it was
trying to get the community on the same page, and then I would have
to start all over.
I know this IS our
best time to build the new library our community so desperately
needs. We have selected
a site, identified our requirements and have FULL community support.
I was a strong
advocate for the bond election, and was again disappointed the
cities dream did not come true.
I also defended
the attempted raid on the budget to take away the money we have set
aside for the new library. I am happy to say I WAS successful in preserving those
dollars.
Now it is time
again to learn from our past, listen to the community and BUILD a
new library. We have a
new library director who knows how to get this accomplished.
We are reviewing our plans, and have already discovered was
to compete better for our state money and to finalize a plan to
operate this facility for many years into the future.
New ideas I have
offered are:
-
Use
the existing library as our supplies and storage facility and
move the city documents from a private
facility into the old library.
You then save on the private storage facility expense,
AND you have already dedicated operating expense towards the new
library, (which is part of the bond requirement).
-
The land value of the
current library can now be counted as part of your local match
because
of it’s continued
use in the library system.
-
The overall cost of the
project goes down, ( because the storage is in the old facility
), and we are now competing
as a new and a renovation project in the state bond.
-
Review our materials
description and cost breakdown of the new facility to find ways
to reduce the square foot cost to build.
-
Secure contracts from
private industry to sponsor parts of the library subject to the
completion of the facility.
This has worked for the Aquatic Center and will work for
the library.
I believe once all
of the above have been reviewed, we will now know, (given our last
bond election), whether or not we have to ask the community for
financial support. If
so, we MUST do a better job of educating our citizens what we are
asking for, and why.
If I am
re-elected, I will continue my strong support for the library and
get this project completed. I
request your support and assistance in making this new library a
reality. I respectfully
ask for your vote on November 5th.
