Park Fees Going Up in 2003

If you are an avid visitor of Folsom Lake, it would be wise to purchase a yearly parks pass before January 1, when park fees rise from $35 to $67. State-wide budget cuts are to blame for the raise in park fees - the revenue will drive in $9 million for the next fiscal year. Boaters will also notice that there will be additional fees for launching, at $45 a year. Day use passes for Folsom Lake will rise to $5, and $4 more for launching a boat. More in the Bee.

    Make Way For Sam's Club

Sam's Club will soon be the latest store to grace the city limits - it has purchased land along Iron Point Road for a new store. Sam's Club is a bulk discount store similar to Costco, and is owned by Sam Walton, founder of Walmart. Contrary to popular rumor, the new store in Folsom will not be replacing the Rancho Cordova location, but supplementing it. Sam's club will bring 130 jobs to the region. More in the Bee.

Iraq, terrorism, and the economy don't seem to bother Barney one bit... give him a Christmas ornament and he's a happy camper. FCUSD Trims $750K a Year With New Bus Contract

The Folsom-Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) made a hard decision, when they voted to contract out its bus service to Laidlaw Corporation, putting the jobs of 60 bus drivers in jeopardy. Laidlaw busses over 1100 school districts in the country, and is the nations largest school bus service. FCUSD is forced to face the reality of cutting $4 million from its annual budget, and the new contract helps them get there. More in the Bee.

    Folsom Endures Wicked Storm

Folsom and the rest of the Sacramento area endured the wrath of Mother Nature last night, as pouring rain and wind gusts up to 60 mph pounded the area. Many old trees, countless holiday decorations, and a few fences were the casualties of the storm. One Folsom man has set up a webcam in his backyard to document the weather - you can check it out at FolsomWeather.Com.

Folsom-Cordova School District Looking to Hire Private Bus Drivers

Facing looming budget cuts, the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) is looking for ways to tighten their belts. One possibility thay are exploring is hiring out Laidlaw Corporation to take care of bussing kids to school, which would save the district about $750,000 a year. Unfortuantely, current drivers are worried about losing their jobs, and union representatives are stepping in to try and restore the district's original contract. More is in the Bee.

Folsom Lake Toyota in Hot Water for Price Fixing

A lawsuit has been filed by the California attorney general against Sacramento's 4 largest Toyota dealerships, including Folsom Lake Toyota, alleging that the 4 dealers are in cahoots together, and have been driving the prices of their vehicles up since 1999. Interestingly enough, ads for these 4 dealers have been pitching cars, but no prices. The end result is higher prices to the customer. More on KCRA's website, and in the Sacramento Business Journal.

City Won't Meet Affordable Housing Deadline

With 100 of 128 acres set aside for affordable housing, the city has come to grips with the reality that it will not likely meet the end-of-year deadline imposed on it to conform to affordable housing standards. The city attorney feels that Legal Services of Northern California may be lenient with the city and give them more time, given the fact that it has done everything it could under the circumstances. More information is in today's Bee.

Light Rail to Folsom May Get Cut Short

Analysts at Regional Transit were off in their estimates for the construction of light rail's extension to Folsom - by about $46 million. What this means is that officials will have to figure out what parts of the project can be skipped, and find alternative means of paying for the project. Folsom and Rancho Cordova officials will be meeting over the next 45 days to figure out where to go from here. More is in the Bee.

This all starts with the city's latest additions to the 1999 Folsom Bikeway master plan, which includes finishing off the Humbug-Willow Creek bike trail, improved access to the Historic Truss Bridge, and other enhancements. Affordable Housing Part V

On Tuesday evening, the Folsom City Council took off a few sites considered for re-zoning, and tabled a few areas for voting on December 10th. Under scrutiny this time is a 4.9 acre site at Folsom-Auburn Road and Oak Avenue, which North Folsom residents were concerned about, citing traffic and safety issues. The site was decided to be split in 2 and voted on next week. More is in Sunday's Bee.
