Development Deal Could Go a Long Way Towards Affordable Housing
A 200-unit development next to Folsom High School may possibly soon be in the works, with 60 units that would be considered "low income" housing, in the form of deut homes scatted throughout the neighborhoods. Sacramento-bases BLAS-B Corporation would be the developers, and would require an additional 11 acres to be rezoned, bringing the total area of land directly surrounding the high school to 32 acres. More in Thursday's Bee.

"Folsom Life" Debuts, Creating Competition for Telegraph
10,000 copies of Folsom Life, a new bi-weekly newspaper, have been distributed among Folsom residents, and intends to provide competition to the 13,000-copy Folsom Telegraph, the city's longest-running newspaper. The Telegraph insists that competition is good, and will only provide more exposure to the Folsom community. November 7th was the first edition of Folsom Life. More information is available in the Business Journal.

Folsom-Cordova School District Split Denied
The Sacramento County Board of Education unanimously voted against splitting the Folsom-Cordova school district last night. In tough financial times, a split in to 2 smaller districts was not seen as a prudent decision, although the future split of the school districts was not ruled out. This is not the first time this proposal has been made, as in 1996, voters denied the split - though it is clear that Rancho Cordova residents were ademantly opposed to it at the time. Several Sites Up For Review Get Rezoned
More areas of land in the city limits have been re-zoned for affordable housing purposes last Monday night. A big win for Prairie Oaks & Willow Springs residents was the removal of 13.8 acres of land near the high school, which helped alleviate part of the potential 'clustering' in the South Folsom area. The Intel land was delayed due to a conflict of interest. More information is in the Bee.

More games for your viewing pleasure. First off is an on-line version of "Pass the Pigs" - it's kind of a dice game, only it's not. If you've never played the game before, it's really easy. Addictive, too! Also, we have fixed Tetris - the old one was no longer working. We found a new version on the web, based on the Simpsons of all things. Check it out!

Bolting Down Manholes Not an Acceptable Solution
On November 8, the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board has given the city a notice of violation in regards to its current practices regarding sewage control during storms. The city currently has the manholes bolted down so they won't pop off in the event of a storm and increased water flow. The board has given the city until November 25 to come up with an acceptable solution to the situation. More in today's Bee.

Measure P Drawing Attention Across the Nation
Folsom wasn't the only city in California where residents put a ban on water meters... Fresno did as well. What effects Measure P will have on our city remains to be seen, as we risk the possibility of some of our water being cut. Newspapers from as far away as Florida are covering this story, as it may simply be the first chapter of a lengthy battle.

Will the District Split?
Much of the fall school board campaign was focused around whether or not to split the Folsom-Cordova school district, but the immediate future of the district is not known. The petition to split the district will ultimately fall under the Board of Education, which will consider the split this month. More on this topic is in the Sacramento Bee.Labels: schools

Cost of Folsom Dam Raise Keeps Rising
The proposed raising of the Folsom Dam by 7 feet has seen its price tag raise $30 million, and now is estimated that it will cost taxpayers almost $250 million. The US Army Corps of Engineers concluded that additional supports and buttresses at the bottom of the dam would need to be created, causing the rise in price. The raise in the dam is still not a done deal, as it is always a possibility to re-engage creation of an Auburn Dam. More in the Sacramento Bee.

Yellow Grass: It's a Fashion Statement!
Will rock landscaping, yellowing grass, and dead shrubs be in Folsom's future? Perhaps. Then again, perhaps not. With the passing of Measure P, Folsom voters decided that pre-1992 homes should be excluded from future water meters, and existing homes should be excluded from their meters being monitored. With this, the government plans to cut 23% of Folsom's existing water supply, which will immediately impact the Ashland area of Folsom. It is speculated that many groups will attempt to battle this out in court. More in the Bee.

They're the Paintball Wizards
One of the little-known secrets in Folsom is that it is home to one of the largest paintball stores in the Sacramento Valley, and now home of its own paintball park. At 401 Stafford Street is Ace Paintball Park, where local weekend warriors can get back to their primal urges and inflict quarter-size welts on their bodies, all in the name of a little good fun. It's a win-win situation: Paintball lovers get thie own park, the special paint dissolves and the shells are picked up by the paintball store employees. A full write-up is in today's Sacramento Bee.

Hooray for Rancho Cordova!
Rancho Cordova will soon be seeing the many benefits of being an incorporated city - including local taxes and government. Citrus Heights was one of the most recent Sacramento-region areas to obtain cityhood, and in 6 years, has seen crime go down, home values go up, and Sunrise Mall get remodeled. Perhaps the new cityhood is a sign of things to come - could a split of the school district be next? More in the Bee.

It's Down to the Wire
The polls are closed and it's time to start tabulating results... early reports show that Miklos, Howell, & Morin are the front-runners for Folsom City Council, Measure P is passing at 53%, but the biggest surprise so far is the governor's race. Bill Simon and Gray Davis differ from only a couple percentage points so far, with Davis now holding a slim margin. Follow the results here.

Historic Truss Bridge - a Unique History to Say The Least!
Many new residents to the city of Folsom may not be aware of the story of the historic truss bridge, which is now a bike trail bridge over Lake Natoma. The bridge has seen it's share of movement, and for 70 years, was a bridge in Siskyou County. In 2000, it was moved back to it's original home in Folsom. San Francisco Loses Bid For 2012 Olympic Games
San Francisco, long considered the front-runner for the United States' 2012 Olympic hopes, had its hopes dashed today when New York was announced as the United States' bid for the Olympic Games. Had San Francisco eventually won the bid, it would have brought a local flavor to the games, as Lake Natoma would have been home to the rowing competitions. More information is available at ESPN.Com.

Measure P: What's the Real Story?
So what is Measure P? Measure P is a new local measure aimed at prohibiting water meters on all pre-1992 homes within Folsom. A "Yes" vote would effectively prohibit water meter retrofits on all pre-1992 homes in Folsom, while a "No" vote would give the city the right to put water meters on all pre-1992 homes, at taxpayer's expense. An impartial analysis of Measure P is located at SmartVoter.Org.
