Printing Mixup in Sample Ballots

Sample Ballots for Folsom residents have been mailed out and, because of a printing mixup, will necessitate a new packet of information. Measure P, the Folsom water initiative, had mismatched 'rebuttal & arguments' which were misleading to voters. 26,000 new packets were mailed out today to registered Folsom voters. More in the Bee.

Lake Natoma Cleared for Use

Officials have given the green light for swimmers to return to Lake Natoma, after results confirmed that 10,000 gallons of sewage did not make its way in to the water. The lake was closed down for several days, as water was tested for contamination, after a spill resulted from a plumbing blockage at Folsom Prison. Many users of the lake, including students using the CSUS Aquatic Center, were turned away in the past few days as a precaution. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.

Folsom's Affordable Housing Plan OK'd By State

Folsom's plan for affordable housing has gotten the green light from the state, which is a far cry from 10 years ago. The city is now in accordance with state laws for affordable housing in the city. North Folsom residents are still visibly opposed to the plans, and have filed a lawsuit in opposition, claiming that affordable housing ruins the quality of life and property values in North Folsom. The city will now not have to revise its housing plans until 2007. More information is available in the Sacramento Bee.

Folsom Dam Raise Not Happening Any Time Soon

John Doolittle's fight for an Auburn Dam gained some momentum when The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee pushed a water-projects bill in to action, and the raising of Folsom Dam was not on the list. This means that the $219 million project will be delayed for at least a year, and breathes some hope in to the life of the Auburn Dam, which has all but been forgotten since its stoppage in 1975. More information is in the Sacramento Bee.

Will the Folsom-Cordova School District Split?

Many Folsom residents feel it's appropriate for the Folsom-Cordova School District to split up, as both regions are growing and rancho Cordova is eyeing cityhood status. Although support in the Rancho Cordova area is growing, there is still some opposition to it - many feel it would be a very lop-sided proposition. See the Sacramento Bee for details.

2 Sewage Spills Reported in Folsom

Folsom officials are smarting over the latest sewage spills in Folsom - a 2,000 gallon spill in the historic district, as well as a 10,000 gallon spill from Folsom prison. A temporary pipe being used during maintenance was to blame for the smaller spill, and an unknown prisoner at Folsom Prison was responsible for the larger one. Lake Natoma is considered contaminated and unsafe for public use at this time. More details in the Bee.

Police May Examine High-Speed Chase Policy

The Folsom Police Department is set to review the September 6 incident in which a San Quentin parolee hit and killed a Folsom resident, as a result of a high-speed chase throughout the streets of Folsom. Anne Sedgwick, a businesswoman whose car was also struck during the chase, is questioning the pursuit policy herself. Folsom PD are looking at ways of ridding criminals off the streets, while at the same time, making sure pedestians and motorists are safe as well. More in the Sacramento Bee.

Residents Opposed to Crematorium on Forrest Street

Lakeside Cemetery and Miller Funeral Home on Forrest Street are planning on building a crematorium in the back of the funeral home, however residents are opposed to the idea, citing that smoke created from the crematorium poses a health concern. Miller Funeral Home is one of Folsom's oldest businesses, having been in business for over 130 years. Although they feel the accusations are not valid, they are still willing to listen to residents. More information is available in Sunday's Bee.

That's Our New College Up On That Hill!

The structure you have seen being created on top of the hill near Home Depot is not an elementary scholl, nor is it a church. That's part of Folsom Lake College, which will likely soon be a 20,000-student community college, tucked away in the Folsom Hills. In 2004, Folsom Lake College will gain independence and no longer be considered a satellite campus of Consumnes River College... with many phases of expansion forthcoming, we've only seen the beginning of a brand new part of Folsom. Folsom Lake Boating Season Drawing to a Close Soon

It's September, and many Folsom boaters know what that means... the start of the end of Folsom's boating season. The lowering water levels at Folsom Lake show that soon it will be too shallow for recreational boating, such as water-skiing or wakeboarding. If you're not quite ready to let go of summer yet, you better head out to Folsom Lake - you only have a couple of weeks left!

Black Bear Spotted in Folsom Neighborhoods

During the past week, a wild black bear has been spotted dozens of times, for 4 separate nights in Folsom. Fish and game have set up a bear trap to try and catch it, although it has not been successful yet. Although the bear is in a residential area, it appears extremely scared of people and is obviously very lost. If you are concerned for yourself or your pet, make sure you carry a whistle with you on walks - it would likely scare it off. More information on FOX 40's website.

Folsom Guitar Teacher Killed in Police Chase

Folsom resident Aaron Farahmand, 28, was an innocent victim of a high-speed police chase on Friday. Police were chasing Robert Mundy, a San Quentin parolee, who was speeding at 70 miles an hour along Riley Street, when Mundy's Ford pickup crashed in to Farahmand's Honda Accord. Farahmand was a very well-loved guitar teacher with 85 students. Donations in Farahmand's memory can be made to The Aaron Farahmand Memorial Fund, c/o Merchants National Bank, P.O. Box 747, Sacramento, CA, 95812. More information is in the Bee, and on News10's website.

Critics Still Unhappy With Affordable Housing Plans

Although Folsom City Council is quite happy with the results of their decisions for affordable housing in Folsom, it is not sitting well with many residents. Most notably, the decision not to spread out affordable housing, but to 'cluster' them along 14 different areas. 3 out of the 14 areas are in Natoma Station. More information is in the Sacramento Bee.
