Multi-Family Rezoning Continues to Incense Residents
Folsom planners and the city council are under increasing scrutiny due to the controversial locations of multi-family, or 'low income' residences within Folsom. Many grass-roots advocate groups have lead the way to move these proposed re-zones in to other areas of town. For more information about this, The planning commission has set up a page specifically for this hot topic, and is accessible here. You can also e-mail the planning commission at planningcounter@folsom.ca.us.

Folsom Ranks First in Median Income, Second in College Grads
The 2000 census data is in, and Folsom has ranked first in the Sacramento Valley in median income, with an average income of $82,000. Folsom trails only Davis in the percentage of college graduates in the area. Davis, which is most well known for its university (UC Davis), tops in at almost 69%. Many factors figure to weigh in to the high percentage of income in the area, however the presence of Intel and other high-tech companies in ther region figure to be a major contributing factor. More information is available in Sunday's Sacramento Bee.Labels: Intel, trails

Second High School Proposed in Empire Ranch Area
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) is seeking an area for a second high school, in order to alleviate the incredible overcrowding at Folsom High School. Empire Ranch looks to secure the location - negotiations have begun with Elliott Homes, and a 1,500-student high school is scheduled to open in fall of 2006. District officials say the project is already $3-6 million over budget, without even knowing where the site will be located. Folsom Looks to Increase Tourism
Folsom has had little problems filling hotel rooms during the business week, however vacancy rates on the weekends are something the Folsom Tourism Bureau wants to improve upon. Folsom is looking to make the city more of a destination to residents of the Bay Area and other areas. Folsom's proximity to the gold country, rafting areas, as well as historical hotspots such as Sutter Street, the Folsom Powerhouse, and Folsom Lake to name a few, are making the city an attractive option on the weekends. Residents Furious Over Proposed 'Low Income' Re-Zoning
Folsom mayor Jeff Starsky was greeted on Monday by a throng of angry residents from the American River Canyon North area, who are less than enthused about proposed low income housing in the area. Residents have started a grass-roots campaign, with intentions of ridding the proposed zoning, claiming that low income units would bring in unnecessary traffic and pollution problems. More information can be found in the Sacramento Bee, or the Sacramento Business Journal.

Folsom High School Hosts 'Every 15 Minutes' DUI Campaign
Every 15 minutes, someone dies from an alcohol-related car accident.
Folsom High students participated with Placer County Chaplaincy and local police in a national alcohol awareness project on Wednesday, April 24. A staged car accident was displayed in front of Folsom High, where 2 students "died" and others were badly injured. Some students were called out of class every 15 minutes as one of the 'walking dead' to symbolize the statistics. An assembly was later held at the school where students learned first-hand the effects of driving under the influence.
Pictures from the event can be viewed here. (Watch out, they are pretty realistic and very graphic) Labels: Car Accident, Folsom High School, Folsom Police

Folsom Zoo's Ursula the Bear dies at age 23
Ursula the bear, a popular black bear recently moved in to the Folsom Zoo, was put to sleep this week after an incurable infection got the best of her. Ursula is perhaps best known through then-teenager Justin Barker of Elk Grove, who raised enough money to move Ursula from her cage in Roseville to the Folsom Zoo in 1998. Ursula was one of 5 bears at the Folsom Zoo, and will be missed. More information can be found in the Sacramento Bee.Labels: Folsom Zoo
